What was drawn as a celebration has, sadly, become a memorial and a tribute.

In collaboration with The Establishment Brewing Company, I created an illustration of everyone’s favourite neighbourhood turkey for the label on one of their coveted Barrel Series saisons. Sadly, just days before the launch, Turk passed away.

“The Born To Run label celebrates Calgary’s former transient celebrity, Turk Diggler, the wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) who was known to skulk about in the neighbourhood of Ramsay. Turk was a reminder of Calgary’s relentless sprawl into the habitats and ecosystems of Alberta, and the stubborn determination of the prairie's fauna to adapt to urban settings. In April of 2020, Turk said, “I gotta find out how it feels”, and he hit the road, leaving the neighbourhood of Ramsay behind, looking for love.”

Turk’s true legacy is the donations that have come in to the Calgary Food Bank on behalf of Turk. The Establishment Brewing Company will be contributing to that legacy as well.

Born To Run is available now, from Establishment Brewing.
